How to Create a Comfortable Guest Room for Friends & Family

A guest room spends most of the year shut and empty. Then for three or four days it has to work properly. Someone needs to sleep well, unpack without hunting for a flat surface, and not feel like they’ve been put up in a storage room that happens to have a bed.

Most online advice for this is styling advice: layer the lighting, fold the towels a certain way, put a candle on the dresser. That’s fine once the room works. What decides whether it works is the furniture, and in particular whether it can cope with sitting idle for months. That’s a different job from furnishing a bedroom you use every day, and it’s what this guide covers, with real space and price numbers.

Why guest room furniture is a different problem

Daily-use furniture gets looked after without anyone noticing. Cushions get sat on and plumped, wood gets dusted because someone sees the dust, and a mattress airs out because someone sleeps on it.

A guest room gets none of that. In a humid Indian climate, months of stillness do real damage to some materials. Foam and fabric upholstery that stays uncompressed can turn musty or grow mould during the monsoon, especially in a closed room with poor airflow. Engineered wood and particleboard can swell a little at the joints as humidity swings between dry season and monsoon. You get the chest of drawers that sticks, and you find out only after your guests have already arrived.

Solid wood copes better with this kind of neglect. It doesn’t sag or flatten from disuse the way foam does, and a well-seasoned piece handles humidity changes without the swelling and sticking. That’s a basic property of timber versus manufactured board and foam, not a claim about any one brand (our guide on whether solid wood furniture is sustainable goes into more detail). It matters more in a guest room than anywhere else, because this is the furniture that goes longest between uses.

How much space does a guest room need?

A guest room built around a double bed needs roughly 9 by 10 feet. That fits the bed, a bedside table and a compact wardrobe with room to move, using the same clearances as in our bed size guide for India.

Here’s the arithmetic. A double bed is about 4.5 by 6.25 feet, and a standard two-door wardrobe is about 2 feet deep. Add 24 inches of walking space on at least one side of the bed and 18 inches at the foot, and you land at around 9 by 10 feet. That’s also what most Indian builders quote for a standard guest bedroom.

If your room is smaller, two swaps free up the most floor: a single bed instead of a double, and a compact two-door wardrobe instead of a three- or four-door one. Together they save roughly 1.5 to 2 feet of width, which is often the difference between a room and a corridor.

What a guest room actually needs

Four things, roughly in order of importance.

A proper bed. Not a mattress on the floor, and not a sofa that’s permanently set up as a bed. A single suits one guest at a time, and a double works for two adults on a short stay. Our bed collection has both, and the single beds range is worth a look if space is tight.

A bedside table. Guests need somewhere for a phone, a glass of water and a lamp. It’s the cheapest item here and the one people miss first, because it’s the first thing they reach for after switching off the light. Bedside tables start under ₹5,000.

Closed storage. Someone arriving with a bag needs somewhere to unpack that isn’t the floor. A wardrobe is the full answer and a chest of drawers is the compact one. Either beats a suitcase lying open in the corner for three days.

A light by the bed. One ceiling light is enough to find the switch and useless for reading. A table lamp on the bedside table or a small floor lamp in the corner fixes that for far less than redoing the lighting.

Anything beyond these, like a bench, an armchair or a mirror, is optional. Add them once the basics are in and there’s still floor space left.

What does it cost to furnish a guest room in India?

Most guides skip this part. These figures come from our own catalogue and cover a bed, bedside table, wardrobe and lamp at three levels, all in solid Sheesham.

TierBedBedside tableWardrobeLampTotal
EssentialSheesham Wooden Bed, ₹16,599Lyon Bedside Table, ₹3,8002 Door Solid Wardrobe, ₹37,599Druid Wooden Floor Lamp ₹7,599Around ₹65,499
ComfortableWana Bed, ₹34,299Rare Bedside Table, ₹5,399Melody Wardrobe, ₹51,599Floor lamp, around ₹7,199Around ₹98,000
PremiumPoster Bed Adana Swaram, ₹59,599Jerry Bedside Table,₹5,399Two Door Wardrobe, ₹32,999Floor lamp, around ₹6,299Around ₹104,296

Two things stand out. The bed is what pushes the total up as you move through the tiers. Going from Essential to Comfortable adds over ₹21,000 on the bed and about ₹6,000 on the wardrobe. And the lamp is the smallest cost at every level, so it’s a poor place to save. You’d gain very little and lose the room’s only bedside light.

These prices reflect an ongoing sale and will shift with promotions. The gaps between the tiers, roughly ₹65,000, ₹98,000 and ₹104,000, should still work as a planning range across the bedroom collection.

Making the room useful the rest of the year

A room that sits empty eleven months and hosts guests for a few weekends isn’t earning its space. This is where furniture choice matters more than styling. A storage bench at the foot of the bed is seating, a spot for folding laundry or reading day to day, and luggage support when a guest turns up. A console table or slim writing desk turns the room into a study or home office between visits, without committing it to either role. Nothing has to be moved out when guests arrive. The pieces just get used differently.

That’s a different approach from fold-away or convertible furniture, which solves the problem by making things disappear. Solid wood solves it by picking pieces that work in more than one setting from the start. A bench holds a suitcase on Saturday and a laptop on Tuesday, and there’s nothing to fold, unlock or motorise.

FAQs

What furniture does a guest room need?
A bed, a bedside table, closed storage (a wardrobe or chest of drawers) and a light near the bed, not just an overhead one. Anything else is a bonus once those are covered.

How big should a guest room be in India?
About 9 by 10 feet if it’s built around a double bed, which leaves room for a compact wardrobe, a bedside table and comfortable walking space. With a single bed, a room as small as 8 by 9 feet can work.

How much does it cost to furnish a guest room in India?
Roughly ₹60,000 for an essential solid wood setup (bed, bedside table, wardrobe, lamp) up to about ₹150,000 for a premium one, based on current catalogue prices. The bed is usually what moves the total most between tiers.

Is solid wood good for a room that’s rarely used?
Yes, and often better than fabric or engineered wood. In a humid climate, foam and fabric can pick up odours or mould, and engineered board can swell and stick at the joints. Solid wood is much less prone to both, which matters most in a room that sits idle for long stretches. Our sustainability guide covers this further.

Can a guest room double as a study or home office?
Yes. Pieces like a bench or console table work in either role without folding or reconfiguring anything, so the room just gets used differently from week to week.

What size bed is best for a guest room?
A single suits one guest at a time and saves the most floor space. A double suits two adults on a short stay but needs at least 9 by 10 feet. Our bed size guide has exact dimensions for every size.
